Understanding Video Codecs: H.264 vs H.265 vs AV1

Video codecs are the backbone of digital video. Every time you stream a movie, join a video call, or watch a clip on social media, a codec is doing the heavy lifting of compressing and decompressing video data. But not all codecs are created equal. In this guide, we break down the three most important codecs today: H.264, H.265, and AV1.

What Is a Video Codec?

A codec (coder-decoder) is an algorithm that compresses raw video into a smaller file and decompresses it for playback. Raw video is enormous — a single second of uncompressed 1080p video at 24fps takes roughly 150 MB. Codecs make streaming and storage practical by reducing that to a few megabytes or less.

How Video Compression Works

Video codecs exploit two types of redundancy:

Spatial redundancy — Within a single frame, neighboring pixels often share similar colors. The codec groups these into blocks and represents them efficiently.
Temporal redundancy — Consecutive frames in a video are usually very similar. Instead of storing each frame independently, the codec stores only the differences between frames.

Encoding Pipeline:

Raw Video → Frame Analysis → Motion Estimation → Transform & Quantize → Entropy Coding → Bitstream
     ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓
[Huge] [I/P/B frames] [Motion vectors] [DCT/DST blocks] [CABAC/CAVLC] [Small]

Key Codec Concepts

I-frames (Intra) — Complete frames encoded independently, like a JPEG image
P-frames (Predicted) — Frames that reference previous frames
B-frames (Bi-directional) — Frames that reference both past and future frames
GOP (Group of Pictures) — The sequence pattern of I, P, and B frames
Bitrate — The amount of data used per second of video

H.264 (AVC) — The Universal Standard

H.264, also known as AVC (Advanced Video Coding), was finalized in 2003 and quickly became the most widely deployed video codec in history. It powers everything from Blu-ray discs to YouTube to security cameras.

Key Features

Block size: 4×4 to 16×16 macroblocks
Profiles: Baseline, Main, High (and extensions)
Entropy coding: CAVLC (faster) or CABAC (better compression)
Maximum resolution: Up to 8K (High profile)
Bit depth: 8-bit (standard), 10-bit (High 10 profile)

Strengths

Universal hardware support — Every device made in the last 15 years can decode H.264
Mature ecosystem — Extensive tooling, documentation, and optimization
Low encoding complexity — Fast encoding even on modest hardware
Streaming compatibility — Works with HLS, DASH, and every streaming platform

Limitations

Lower compression efficiency compared to newer codecs
Struggles with 4K content at reasonable bitrates
Licensing fees through MPEG-LA patent pool (though widely absorbed into device costs)

H.265 (HEVC) — The Efficiency Upgrade

H.265, or HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), was standardized in 2013 as the successor to H.264. It achieves roughly 50% better compression at the same visual quality.

Key Features

Block size: 4×4 to 64×64 CTUs (Coding Tree Units)
Profiles: Main, Main 10, Main Still Picture
Entropy coding: CABAC only (improved over H.264’s version)
Maximum resolution: Up to 8K natively designed
Bit depth: 8-bit and 10-bit standard, up to 16-bit
HDR support: Native support for HDR10, Dolby Vision

Strengths

50% bitrate reduction — Same quality as H.264 at half the file size
4K/8K optimized — Larger block sizes handle high-resolution content efficiently
HDR native — Built-in support for wide color gamut and high dynamic range
Broadcast adoption — Used in ATSC 3.0, DVB, and satellite broadcasting

Limitations

Complex licensing — Multiple patent pools (MPEG-LA, HEVC Advance, Velos Media) create uncertainty
Higher encoding cost — 5-10x more compute than H.264 for encoding
Incomplete browser support — Safari supports it natively; Chrome and Firefox do not (due to licensing)
Hardware decode gaps — Older devices and some Android phones lack HEVC hardware decode

AV1 — The Open-Source Future

AV1 (AOMedia Video 1) was released in 2018 by the Alliance for Open Media, a consortium including Google, Apple, Microsoft, Netflix, Amazon, and others. It was designed to be royalty-free while matching or exceeding HEVC compression.

Key Features

Block size: 4×4 to 128×128 superblocks
Profiles: Main, High, Professional
Entropy coding: Multi-symbol arithmetic coding
Maximum resolution: Up to 8K+
Bit depth: 8-bit, 10-bit, 12-bit
Film grain synthesis — Encodes grain parameters separately for efficiency
Royalty-free — No licensing fees

Strengths

Royalty-free — No patent licensing costs, open specification
Best compression — 30-50% better than H.264, 20-30% better than HEVC
Modern features — Film grain synthesis, screen content coding, reference frame scaling
Industry backing — YouTube, Netflix, and major browsers all support it
Growing hardware support — New chips from Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, Apple, and MediaTek include AV1 decode

Limitations

Very slow encoding — 10-100x slower than H.264 without hardware encoders
Hardware encode still emerging — Only newest GPUs (2022+) have AV1 hardware encoders
Older device incompatibility — Devices before 2020 generally lack AV1 hardware decode
Ecosystem maturity — Fewer tools and less documentation than H.264

When to Use Each Codec

Choose H.264 When:

You need maximum device compatibility
Real-time encoding is required (live streaming, video calls)
Target audience includes older devices or smart TVs
Encoding resources are limited

Choose H.265 When:

Delivering 4K/HDR content
Bandwidth savings are critical and Apple ecosystem is primary target
Broadcasting or satellite delivery
Hardware encoders are available (NVENC, QuickSync, VideoToolbox)

Choose AV1 When:

Distributing content at scale (CDN cost savings)
Targeting modern browsers and devices
Royalty-free licensing is important
Quality-per-bit is the top priority
You can afford slower encoding (VOD, not live)

The Future of Video Codecs

The codec landscape continues to evolve:

VVC (H.266) — The successor to HEVC, offering another 50% improvement but with similar licensing concerns
AV2 — In development by AOMedia, targeting another generation of improvement
LCEVC — An enhancement layer that can boost any base codec’s efficiency

For most web developers and content creators today, the practical choice is:

H.264 for maximum compatibility
AV1 for modern platforms where quality and cost matter
H.265 for Apple-centric or broadcast workflows

Understanding these codecs helps you make informed decisions about video encoding, streaming architecture, and tool selection. Whether you’re building a streaming platform or simply trying to reduce video file sizes, choosing the right codec is one of the most impactful decisions you can make.
