Subtitle Formats Guide: SRT, VTT, ASS Compared

Subtitles are essential for accessibility, language learning, and watching content in noisy environments. But not all subtitle formats are equal — they range from simple timestamped text to fully styled typographic systems. This guide covers the three most important subtitle formats: SRT, WebVTT, and ASS/SSA.

Overview of Subtitle Formats

SRT (SubRip Text)

SRT is the most widely supported subtitle format. Its simplicity is its greatest strength — virtually every video player, editor, and platform supports SRT files.

Format Structure

1
00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:04,500
Welcome to this video about
subtitle formats.

2
00:00:05,000 --> 00:00:08,200
SRT is the simplest and most
widely supported format.

3
00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:12,800
It uses sequential numbering
and simple timestamps.

4
00:00:13,500 --> 00:00:17,000
<i>Italic text</i> and <b>bold text</b>
are sometimes supported.

SRT Rules

Sequence number — Sequential integer (starts at 1)
Timestamp format — HH:MM:SS,mmm --> HH:MM:SS,mmm (comma for milliseconds)
Text — One or more lines of subtitle text
Separator — Empty line between entries
Encoding — UTF-8 recommended (some players expect BOM)

Basic HTML Tags (Player-Dependent)

Some players support limited HTML in SRT:

<i>italic</i>
<b>bold</b>
<u>underline</u>
<font color="#FF0000">colored text</font>

These are not part of the SRT specification and support varies widely.

Strengths

Universal compatibility
Human-readable and easy to edit
Tiny file size
Easy to generate programmatically
Supported by YouTube, Vimeo, and all major platforms

Limitations

No official styling specification
No positioning control
No metadata or header section
Timestamp precision limited to milliseconds
No support for karaoke effects or animations

WebVTT (Web Video Text Tracks)

WebVTT was designed by the W3C specifically for HTML5 video. It extends SRT’s simplicity with web-native features like CSS styling and positioning.

Format Structure

<c.highlight>WebVTT</c> adds styling and
positioning to subtitles.

00:00:09.000 --> 00:00:12.800
It supports <b>bold</b>, <i>italic</i>,
and <u>underline</u> natively.

Cue identifiers are optional
but useful for scripting.

  <track kind="chapters" src="chapters.vtt" srclang="en">
</video>

ASS/SSA (Advanced SubStation Alpha)

ASS is the most powerful subtitle format, offering complete typographic control. It’s the standard for anime fansubs and any content requiring complex visual effects.

Format Conversion Tips

SRT → WebVTT

The conversion is straightforward:

Add WEBVTT header
Change timestamp comma to period (00:00:01,000 → 00:00:01.000)
Remove sequence numbers (optional in VTT)

SRT → ASS

Create [Script Info] and [V4+ Styles] sections
Convert timestamps (00:00:01,000 → 0:00:01.00)
Map each subtitle to a Dialogue line with Default style

ASS → SRT

Strip all override tags ({\...})
Convert \N to actual line breaks
Convert timestamps and add sequence numbers
Styling information is lost

WebVTT → SRT

Remove WEBVTT header and metadata
Change timestamp period to comma
Remove cue settings and styling
Add sequence numbers

Choosing the Right Format

For Web Video

WebVTT — Native browser support, CSS styling, accessibility features.

For Universal Compatibility

SRT — Works everywhere, easy to create and edit.

For Styled/Animated Subtitles

ASS — Full creative control, ideal for anime and artistic content.

For Streaming Platforms

SRT or WebVTT — Most platforms accept both; check specific requirements.

For Accessibility

WebVTT — Supports speaker identification, positioning for multiple speakers, and integrates with browser accessibility APIs.

Tools and Workflow

Creating and converting subtitles is a common workflow. Key considerations:

Always use UTF-8 encoding (with BOM for SRT if targeting Windows players)
Test timing synchronization after conversion
Verify styling renders correctly in target player
Consider font availability when using ASS (embed fonts in MKV)

Subtitle Converter — Convert between SRT, VTT, and ASS formats in your browser
Video Metadata Viewer — Check embedded subtitle tracks in video files
